Tallulah man behind bars in Webster on drug charges
-Drugs detected by Sheriff’s K-9 “Chesapeake Cyndi”
Minden, La. -- Mar 3, 2010 --

While traveling Interstate 20 through Minden late Tuesday night, a Tallulah, La. man was arrested by Webster Parish Sheriff’s deputies on drug charges.

William Alonzo Day, 19, displayed unusually nervous behavior during a traffic stop conducted by Sheriff’s Community Action Directed (CAD) Patrol deputies. His conduct and conflicting information raised suspicions among the officers—and that’s when K-9 handler Lt. Robert Hayden sought the assistance of K-9 “Chesapeake Cyndi.”

“I escorted Chesapeake Cyndi around the vehicle,” said Hayden. “And she alerted two times with an indication towards the trunk of the car.”

Her alert provided probable cause for the officers to search the vehicle, and that is when they discovered three large bags of suspected marijuana.

Day was booked at Webster’s Bayou Dorcheat Correctional Center on the charge of possession of a CDS Schedule I with intent to distribute, and deputies confiscated a total of 1276 grams (nearly three pounds) of the substance.

“This administration is very proud of the additional efforts we now have since we established the CAD Patrol,” said Webster Sheriff Gary S. Sexton. “This grant-funded program allowed us to expand the types of specific patrol we could offer our parish without taking from the existing patrols.”

Sexton notes that the continued increase in drug, DWI and theft busts only validate that the decision to implement the CAD Patrol team was a good one. “The results of this program show me that we correctly identified a definite need for the additional and specifically-directed patrol efforts—and I’m very pleased we’re meeting that need,” he concluded.
