Webster deputies confiscate $1 million drug supply
-Drugs averted from three southern states
Sep 25, 2009 --
WPSO CAD Patrol Team Members Lt. Robert Hayden with “Chesapeake-Cindy”; Deputy Wade Wells; Deputy Bobby Igo, III. This team was responsible for bust of the trafficking of nearly 450 lbs of marijuana, and subsequent arrest of two men.
Following a recent interstate drug bust made by Webster Parish Sheriff’s Community Action Directive Patrol team members, investigators reviewing the confiscated evidence determined the 430 pound supply to have an estimated street value of $1 million.
Wednesday’s bust, which resulted from a routine traffic stop with the assistance of the sheriff’s canine, “Chesapeake-Cindy”, led to the arrest of Humberto Mata and Senen Dominguez who were both charged with possession of a Schedule I narcotic with intent to distribute and criminal conspiracy. Upon further investigation deputies and troopers from the Louisiana State Police learned that the drugs were to be delivered to locations in Alabama, Georgia and North Carolina.
During the bust and subsequent search of the evidence, two Webster deputies were taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor symptoms following exposure to a suspicious white powder that was covering the drugs in layers. While both deputies have made a full recovery, investigators did not take chances today while they examined the bundles of suspected marijuana. The masked and gloved deputies recovered samples of the packaged goods that will be sent to the regional crime lab for testing.
“It seems clear from reviewing the evidence that these goods were packaged in an assembly-line manner,” explained Webster Chief Criminal Deputy Bobby Igo, II. “I’m convinced this was no small operation.”
Lab testing of the unidentified white powder, that investigators suspect may be a form of pesticide, is still pending; and the sheriff’s office expects to receive more information as to the identity of the substance within a few weeks.
In the meantime, Mata and Dominguez are each held at the Bayou Dorcheat Correctional Center on bond amounts totaling $1 million each.
