Two arrested for carnal knowledge
- Sheriff says to parents: ‘educate yourselves; educate your kids’
Minden, La. --
Aug 4, 2009 --
Two young men were arrested last Friday for felony carnal knowledge following an investigation that left Webster Parish Sheriff’s detectives in dismay.
Jamie Robert Garrett, 18, of Minden and Michael Ryan Garrett, 17, of Sarepta were taken into custody and each charged with felony carnal knowledge after investigators reviewed complaints filed by the mothers of two young girls, 13 and 14 years old.
“We were contacted after one of the mothers reported that her daughter had admitted to her that she had been sexually active,” explained Webster Parish Sheriff’s Major Steve Cropper. “Her daughter then admitted that these acts had taken place with an 18 year-old male.”
Upon further investigation, detectives learned of the other suspect and victim. According to Cropper, the sexual acts took place when the four met up for an unsupervised meeting in a rural, secluded area.
“It’s just not good,” said Sheriff Gary Sexton. “Not for any of those involved. I’d like to say to all parents: ‘Educate yourselves; educate your kids. Let them know what is acceptable and what is not. Let them know the law—and make it a point to know what your kids are up to and who they are with.’”
The Webster Parish Sheriff’s Department offers a number of public education topics that can help parents, teachers and community leaders better understand ways in which they can stay involved with their youth, provide for better safety of their kids, and educate themselves about laws that are in place to protect young people. From Internet safety to safeguarding your teen’s cell phone, there are topics that investigators are happy to talk about. Any parent, church or civic groups interested in learning more about one of these topics should contact the Webster Parish Sheriff’s Department at 318-377-1515.
