Sheriff’s office seeking owner of stray cow
Heflin, La. --
Jul 20, 2009 --
Webster Parish Sheriff Gary Sexton reports that the Webster Parish Sheriff’s Department and the Louisiana State Livestock Brand Inspectors are trying to identify ownership of a stray cow penned by a local rancher in the 2700 block of Franklin Road near Heflin, La. in south Webster Parish.
If no owner of the cow is located, the cow, penned since July 9, 2009, will be held for ten additional days beginning July 20, 2009 and sold on the next regular sale day at the closest livestock barn.
The damages, care, transportation and feed will be held against the sale or claim of the cow. The cow is currently stored with the Webster Sheriff’s Office Livestock Contractor.
Sheriff Sexton would like to encourage livestock owners to brand or otherwise permanently mark their animals to provide for a better system of identifying and returning lost or stolen animals without the expense of an impoundment. Such markings will also prevent theft.
Anyone with questions regarding the identification of the cow may call the Webster Parish Sheriff’s Department at 318-377-1515 or the Louisiana Livestock Brand Commission locally at 318-949-3225.
